The Luce Is Ferrari Making the Best of a Bad Situation
The EU's zero emission mandate put automakers in a tough spot, and nowhere is that more visible than with Ferrari's new Luce. Well intentioned as the policy may be, it pushed reluctant manufacturers to pour money into EV R&D whether the market wanted it or not… and Ferrari's response tells you everything about how this is playing out.
Given the circumstances, I think Ferrari is making the best of a bad situation. My guess is they saw the demand for performance EVs was (and still is) limited, watched what happened to Porsche, and decided to position the Luce as an ultra expensive, limited concept car aimed more at in system XX quota customers than actual enthusiasts.
Don't get me wrong, the Luce is interesting (genuinely). But $640k to $750k for an electric Ferrari sedan? If you know anything about Maranello, you know how fiercely they guard their lightweight, Italian designed, hand made, race to road ethos… and the Luce checks none of those boxes. Honestly, this is a car Ferrari would never have built (a sedan, heavy, generic looking) if it weren't for the mandates.
Without a doubt, Ferrari will recover, and its EV strategy is nowhere near as rocky as Porsche's. I'd bet a good chunk of repeat buyers pick up a Luce or two just to boost their odds of an XX allocation (Porsche buyers did the same with the Taycan and GT models, and it worked… until it didn't). The lesson here is simple: mandates can shape what gets built, but they can't manufacture demand. Ferrari's brand will carry it through regardless.
